Career Paths

Who might you grow up to be?

Every job you will meet in these rooms has one thing in common: it helps someone. Caring, building, discovering, teaching, growing — and brand-new careers arriving with the changing world, where AI can be a wonderful helper while kindness and good judgement stay human work. Whatever the tools become, the world will always need people who are curious and kind.

Every job helps someone

From nurses to plumbers to poets — we look for the helping in every path.

Try, don't decide

Nothing here locks a child in. Curiosity first; choosing comes much later.

AI is a helper, not a boss

We wonder at what machines can do, and practise checking and kindness ourselves.

The Spark Sorter

What makes you sparkle?

0 of 30 sorted

Read each little activity and sort it: things you love, things you'd like to try, and things that are not for you yet. There are no right answers and no scores to beat — your sparkle is yours, and it can change any time.

People Who Care

Read together

A story about a nurse, a doctor or a vet who gently helps someone frightened feel brave.

  1. Lesson 1

    Ages 4+

    Caring is a job

Do it: Set up a teddy-bear clinic. Take turns being the kind doctor, and practise gentle words: 'You're safe. Let me help.'

Big idea: Many grown-ups spend their whole working day caring for other people — and it takes practice to do it kindly.

How we know: Interview a helper you actually know (a nurse, a firefighter, a grandparent who volunteers). Ask what they love about their work and what is hard. Real people are the best source.

  2. Lesson 2

    Ages 5+

Where animals go to the doctor

Do it: Open a pretend vet clinic for the household toys. Make appointment cards, check ears with a torch, wrap a soft bandage.

Big idea: Vets keep animals healthy — from hamsters to horses to cows that give us milk.

How we know: Visit or watch a real vet visit (a video counts). Notice how the vet checks, listens and explains — that is the method, and you copied it.

  3. Lesson 3

    Ages 6+

    The helpers in a hospital

Do it: List every person it takes to run a hospital: cooks, cleaners, porters, nurses, surgeons, engineers who fix the machines.

Big idea: A hospital is a team of dozens of different careers. Nobody does it alone.

How we know: Count the roles on a hospital's own website or by asking anyone who has visited. The list is long — your count is the evidence.

  4. Lesson 4

    Ages 8+

    Listening hearts

Do it: Practise being a counsellor for two minutes: ask 'How are you, really?' and listen without interrupting. Then swap roles.

Big idea: Some careers are mostly listening and understanding feelings — and listening is a skill you can train.

How we know: Try it both ways: interrupt while listening, then listen fully. Compare how the speaker felt each time. Your own observation is the evidence.

  5. Lesson 5

    Ages 8+

    Robots that help too

Do it: Sort care tasks into two piles: could a machine do it (carry, remind, measure) or does it need a human heart (comfort, listen, celebrate)?

Big idea: Machines are learning to help with tasks, but kindness stays a human job — the future needs people who do both well.

How we know: Ask the same question about a robot you can see (a vacuum, a voice helper). What does it do well? What would it miss? Sort and decide for yourself.

Calm first

Put a hand on your heart and breathe slowly — carers look after hearts too, including their own.

One kind thing

Do one caring act for someone at home before the lesson ends.

How do we know?

Ask a real helper what their day is like. Going to the source is the kindest and truest way to learn about any job.

For grown-ups: the Spark Sorter saves choices only on this device — nothing is uploaded, and there are no scores. Keep it light: children change their minds often, and that is healthy. When a career interests your child, the best field trip is meeting someone who actually does it — most people love being asked about their work.
